The Third Major United States Government Expedition to the Interior of the Great Plains

[Major Stephen H. Long]. Edwin James. An Account of an Expedition from Pittsburgh to the Rocky Mountains, performed in the years 1819 and '20, by order of the Hon. John C. Calhoun, Sec'y of War under the Command of Major Stephen H. Long. Philadelphia: H. C. Carey & I. Lea, 1822-23. First edition. Two octavo text volumes and one quarto atlas volume. Text approximately 8.5 x 5 inches. [iv], [8], 503, [1, blank]; [vi], 442, xcviii pages. Atlas volume with the following engraved plates or maps: two double-page maps, seven plates after Seymour, one hand-colored plate, and one double-page chart. Atlas approximately 11.75 x 9.25 inches. Text volumes bound in contemporary tree calf, covers ruled in gilt, spines ruled, tooled and lettered in gilt, mottled edges, marbled endleaves. Atlas volume complete though disbound. Text volumes with boards re-hinged, some intermittent foxing or soiling in text, pages 269-272 in volume I trimmed a bit close on fore-edge, page 371 in volume I missing lower corner (no loss of text on these pages). Pages of atlas volume worn at edges and with some tears and foxing. Overall, a good set. This expedition was the third expedition sent by the U. S. government to survey the Great Plains (the first two being the Lewis and Clark Expedition and Zebulon Pike).

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
