Handsomely Bound, With the Arms of Louis-Auguste de Bourbon

[Louis-Auguste de Bourbon]. Jean de Santeuil. Oeuvres de Feu Monsieur de Santeuil, Chanoine Regulier de Saint Victor, avec !es Traductions par Differents Auteurs. Paris: Simon Benard, 1698. First edition of the poems of Santeuil with French translation. Octavo. With engraved frontispiece portrait. Handsomely bound in contemporary full burgundy morocco, covers gilt-decorated with the coat-of-arms of Louis-Auguste de Bourbon, Comte de Toulouse and Due de Maine, first-born son of Louis XIV and Madame de Montespan and a grand favorite of the Sun King, with an elaborately gilt-tooled spine and raised bands. Dutch marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Housed in a custom clamshell box. Moderate wear to the binding. Hinges strengthened. Two bookplates to the front endpapers. Otherwise a near fine copy, the dedication and/or presentation copy, as this volume was dedicated by the editor to Louis-Auguste de Bourbon. From a private collection from New Orleans.

More Information: de Bourbon was a great favorite of King Louis XIV, who showered him with gifts and titles, and hired the best tutors for him. Louis XIV legitimized his children by Montespan by letters patent in 1673, when Louis-Auguste was three years old, at which time he also received the title of Due du Maine. The mark of cadency in the coat of arms (diagonal bar among the three fleur de !is) shows that Louis-Auguste is a younger but legitimate descendant in Bourbon royal lineage; the cannons in the coat-of-arms symbolize his title of Grand Maitre de l'Artillerie. Santeuil (or Santeul) was the author of Latin  liturgical  hynms  and  other  sacred poems in Latin which attained an esteemed critical reputation. This collection brings together these hymns, poems and paeans in the original Latin, followed by French translations. Text in Latin and French. See Brunet V, 135.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
