With Five Photogravures from Alfred Eisenstaedt, Signed by Him

[Limited Editions Club]. Ernest Hemingway. The Old Man and the Sea. Photogravures by Alfred Eisenstaedt. Introduced by Charles Scribner. [New York]: The Limited Editions Club, [1990].

One of 600 copies signed by Eisenstaedt. Oblong folio. [x], [96] pages. Five photogravures inserted throughout, which are reproduced from the original negatives from the 1952 photos taken by Eisenstaedt for Life Magazine, in which the novel first appeared.

Publisher's blue morocco backstrip over cloth boards, spine lettered in gilt. A fine copy of this handsome book in the original clamshell case.

It was this work, first published in 1952, that won Hemingway a Pulitzer Prize for Literature in 1953. This success served to spur a re-examination of his work, which would eventually lead to his winning The Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954 "for his mastery of the art of narrative, most recently demonstrated in The Old Man and the Sea, and for the influence that he has exerted on contemporary style" (The Nobel Foundation).

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
