Description
[Leo Tolstoy]. Count Lyof N. Tolstoi. War and Peace. From the Russian by Nathan Haskell Dole. New York: Thomas Y. Crowell & Company, Publishers, [1889]. First edition of this translation; inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper of Volume I: "To Mr. Bridgeman. / Leo Tolstoy. / 22 April 1901." Two octavo volumes (7.5 x 5 inches; 190 x 127 mm.). Publisher's blue cloth, front boards and spines stamped in gilt. Bindings worn and somewhat soiled; volume I with hinges and gutter facing title-page cracked; rear hinge cracked on volume II. Text is toned with occasional foxing and thumbsoiling. Overall, a very good copy with a rare inscription by Tolstoy in English. Housed in later quarter blue morocco clamshell case. From the James C. Seacrest Collection. Also affixed to the endleaves and blanks of this volume are various newspaper and magazine photos of Tolstoy and his family. Included are two autograph letters signed by Tolstoy's secretary (possibly Valentin Bulgakov) in English, both are addressed to Mr. Bridgeman, the first stating that he believes that copies of Tolstoy's books were sent to Bridgeman, but cannot account for the delay in their receipt. The second states that he was successful in getting an inscription from Tolstoy in English (presumably referring to this two volume set). Letters are folded and torn, housed in an envelope mounted on front pastedown of Volume I.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.View More Testimonials
