One of Fifty Copies of One of the Most Important American Leaf Books

[Leaf Book]. Robert R. Dearden and Douglas S. Watson. The Bible of the Revolution. Signer's Edition, Containing Original Leaves of both Old and New Testaments & an Essay Concerning It. San Francisco: Printed by Edwin & Robert Grabhorn for John Howell, 1930. First edition, one of only 50 copies of the Signer's Edition (this copy unnumbered). Small quarto. [2], 34 pages. With four original leaves from the Aitken Bible (1782, two from the Book of Micah, and two from the Book of Acts), a leaf from Benjamin Franklin's Confession of Faith (1745) and a facsimile of John Adams' bookplate (not called-for). The standard edition only had two leaves from the Aitken Bible. With a facsimile of a three-page letter from George Washington discussing Aitken's Bible. Unique to the Signer's Edition, is a frontispiece of the signatures of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. Bound in modern full red levant morocco, spine ruled and lettered in gilt, five raised bands. Light minor occasional foxing. A handsome, fine copy of an important American leaf book.
The Aitken Bible was the first complete bible in English published in the newly formed United States of America, and the Congress of the Confederation officially endorsed it; it became the only bible to ever have a congressional endorsement.
    Grabhorn Bibliography 131.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
