[Laurent Bordelon]. A History of the Ridiculous Extravagances of Monsieur Oufle... London: J. Morphew, 1711. First edition in English of this humorous look at a fool and his love of ghost stories.

    More Information:

Octavo. [viii], 303 [sic], [1, ads] pages. Contemporary half mottled calf over marbled boards, spine ruled in blind in compartments, five raised bands, black gilt morocco lettering label. Front board nearly detached, rear joint cracking, binding worn, text toned and somewhat foxed and soiled, one leaf chipped at bottom (with minor loss of text). Fair.

Bordelon (French Author and Doctor of Theology, 1653-1730) viewed his works as his own kind of "mortal sins," and insisted that, although he was a poor writer, he was an honest man. The bizarre nature of his works is reflected in their equally strange titles. Oufle is a kind of Don Quixote, whose grasp on reality is so shaken by his love of ghost stories, that he begins to believe that he is surrounded by ghosts and spirits.

    Cornell 81-82.
