Signed by the Author in Three Volumes

[Laurence Sterne]. The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman. London: Volumes I-IV Printed for R. and J. Dodsley in Pall-Mall, 1760-1761 and Volumes V-IX Printed for T. Becket and P. A. Dehondt, in the Strand, 1762-1767.

Mixed edition. Volumes I and II are second editions; Volumes III-IX are first editions. Signed by the author on the first page of text in volumes V, VII, and IX as usual. Nine sixteenmo volumes.

Uniformly bound in late-nineteenth century or early-twentieth century full brown mottled leather with gilt rules and dentelles, turn-ins ruled in gilt, and gilt spine titles inside five raised bands. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Housed in a custom brown buckram slipcase. Light rubbing to edges and corners. Scattered minor foxing throughout. Previous owner's signature in volumes I, V, and VII. Pair of the same previous owner's bookplates affixed to the front pastedown of each volume. Minor rubbing to the slipcase. Overall, a very good set.

Sterne signed volumes V, VII, and IX to prevent piracy of the book by unscrupulous publishers. A truly beautiful set of Sterne's great comic classic.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
