"Kissing Through the 'Bars'": A Wonderful Frank James Pen and Ink Sketch Sent to his Wife Anna While in Jail Awaiting Trial. Frank James was an accomplished artist who probably could have pursued a career in that area had he been so inclined. This charming drawing was enclosed with one of the letters Frank sent regularly to Anna from jail (unfortunately the letter did not contain a specific reference to the sketch). Anna has written "Kissing Through the 'bars'" in pencil below. Sometime, probably shortly thereafter, she has added in blue pencil "Still my griefs are mine" on the reverse side, and above the sketch a little poem:
    "Many lips unto one speak
    Friendships faith repeating
Lips of one alone I seek
    With this gentle greeting"
The poem is by Maggie May Danehy and was being published in newspapers and other periodicals around 1883-84. Although it is purely speculation, it seems quite plausible that Anna sent the sketch back to Frank in jail after adding these lines, as they certainly reflect feelings she and her husband had for one another. In any case, this is a charming memento of their deep love. 4.25" x 5.75".
