Description

Warmly Inscribed by Jules Massenet to His Close
Friend Émile Bergerat - Son-in-Law of
    Théophile Gautier

[Jules Massenet, composer]. Esclarmonde. Paris: C. Hartmann & Cie, [1889]. First edition, first issue. Presentation copy, inscribed with musical notes on the first blank: "à mon rival en [musical notes]/à mon confrère en musique/à Bergerat. Affectueusement/J. Massenet/mai/89." Quarto. [xii], 306, [2, blank] pages. Bound in later half green levant morocco over marbled boards, spine ruled and lettered in gilt in compartments, five raised bands. Original wrappers bound-in. Original paper spine affixed to rear free endpaper. Some rubbing to spine, some rubbing and soiling to wrappers, text a bit toned and foxed. Still, a very good copy with an excellent association.
Émile Bergerat (1845-1923), was a poet and playwright. He was married to the daughter of the legendary French writer, Théophile Gautier (1811-1872). Bergerat and Massenet met in the 1870's, and Bergerat introduced the young (and inexperienced) Massenet to his eminent future father-in-law. Gautier and Massenet took an instant liking to each other, and Gautier quickly outlined two possible ballets for Massenet to compose. Although these ballets didn't come to fruition, Massenet and Bergerat remained friends for life.
