[John Thomson, association]. Will Tod. Photo Album with Fifty-Five Photographs. [Shanghai, The Alps, and elsewhere: circa 1870s]. Original album with fifty-five photographs, many of which are from China, the first twelve mounted on five leaves (five recto pages and one verso), others laid in; mounted photos with manuscript captions, occasionally signed "W. T." and dated between 1869 and 1873; some loose photographs captioned in pencil on the verso. Prints approximately 4.5 x 6.875 inches, or smaller, in a variety of formats, including one cyanotype, and featuring varied subject matter. Many (roughly half) depict Chinese buildings or landscapes, reminiscent of John Thomson, while others illustrate provincial European scenes. Album leaves approximately 14.25 x 10.625 inches (360 x 270 mm.). Original binding (unsalvageable). Mildew affecting every leaf, starting from the inner margin and spreading out, often damaging prints; loose prints also mildewed, and occasionally creased, a few stuck together; some photos silvered or faded. Poorly preserved, on the whole, but each photograph's contents still largely discernable, if not only slightly damaged. A truly astounding collection of images, likely never before seen. Sold with three copy books comprising retained drafts of Tod's letters (many written from Shanghai, circa 1873), potentially illuminating not only the contents of this album but also the two previous lots in this auction.
