Beer depicting "King Ethelbert's reception of Austin at Richborough," signed in the lower left corner, circa late 19th century. Volume I of three, only. Folio. 962, [30, index] pages. Title page printed in red and black, illustrated with engravings. Contemporary calf, spine lettered in gilt with 6 raised bands. Rebacked and corners refreshed in polished biscuit calf. Original calf to boards rubbed and worn with some losses, corners bumped, moderate edgewear, spine somewhat rubbed with a few light abrasions. Marbled endpapers; ink fore-edge painting title to rear free endpaper recto, hinges reinforced, turn-ins somewhat worn and chipped, endpapers with some repairs and wear, pencil notations to front free endpaper verso and front blank recto. Foxed, text block unevenly toned, repairs to some pages include repair to the lower gutter of title page not affecting text, top and tail of text block stained yellow, top edge darkened, moderate text block edgewear. Very good with bright, well-preserved fore-edge painting.
