[John Steinbeck]. Proof of the Dust Jacket for First Edition of The Grapes of Wrath. For an octavo volume, measuring 18.5" x 8.25" laid open. An artwork proof produced for Viking Press' first edition publication of The Grapes of Wrath, circa 1939, illustration by Elmer Hader. The proof does not include the final dust jacket's inside cover introduction or advertisements. The inside cover flap has a pencil notation from Steinbeck's editor at Viking Press, Pascal "Pat" Covici, that reads, "Proof and not a finished jacket - Pat."

Pascal Covici 1885-1964), had begun working with John Steinbeck as a publisher at Covici-Friede in 1934. After the company failed in 1938, Covici got a job at Viking Press and convinced Steinbeck to sign with him at the new publishing firm. Viking Press went on to publish The Grapes of Wrath the following year (1939). Awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Literature in 1940, The Grapes of Wrath remains one of the most beloved American novels of all time. Steinbeck later went on to dedicate his novel East of Eden to Covici in 1952.

Condition: Light toning with flattened folds and creasing at the spine. Small separations at edges. Minor bumping at the corners. Overall very good.
