    Description

[John Milton]. John Martin (engraver). Mezzotint Collection [from Paradise Lost]. London: 1829. Collection of twenty-four magnificently hand-colored mezzotint plates from the 1927 Septimus Prowett Paradise Lost. Quarto (10.25 x 13.75 inches). Hand-written title-page, twenty-four plates with tissue guards and additional blanks. Contemporary dark blue morocco, spine in six compartments with five raised bands, titled in gilt, elaborate decorative gilt stamping; boards ruled and tooled in gilt, decorative floral corner pieces stamped in gilt. Doublures, elaborately tooled and ruled in gilt with floral corner pieces stamped in gilt; moire free endpapers, flyleaves. All edges gilt. Board edges lightly worn; some light fading to fore edge; joints lightly worn. Front hinge strengthened. Plates lightly toned with some marginal foxing or soiling, image areas largely unaffected. Near fine. A stunning work, wonderfully crafted and finely bound.

"Some of the earliest mezzotints to have been made using soft steel rather than copper and were the first illustrations of Milton's epic work to have been made in the mezzotint medium... They are without doubt one of the most significant series of British book illustration ever to have been produced." Michael J. Campbell, John Martin, 1789-1854 Creation of Light, p. 515.
