Eliot was a Puritan missionary and the translator of the Algonquian Bible, the first Christian Bible published in the North American British colonies. Second and third volumes, of three, only. Two volumes. Folio (13 x 8.5 inches; 330 x 216 mm.). [14], 727, [29]; [8], 264, [14], 206, [14], 207-370, [10], 371-409, [7], 411-427, [7], 429-439, [6], 442-463, [5], 465-477, [9], 479-605, [11], 607-652, [2], 653-667, [9] pages [note: page 479 a folding plate]. Bound without last section, comprised of pages 669-700, plus eight terminal leaves; Z4 torn out, with small fragment remaining, lacking Qqqq3 (and potentially other leaves). Contemporary calf. Binder's waste in rear of Volume III. Bindings worn; boards detached. Wear throughout text-block, with frequent marginal creasing; lower corner of Volume III dampstained. Following Eliot, the book belonged to John Sparhawk, ownership signature, dated 1692, and George P. Chase, bookplate. Good only, but with a remarkable association. Books from John Eliot's personal library seldom enter the marketplace. ESTC S115716.
