Description

[John Burlage and J. P. Hollingsworth]. Abstract of Land Claims, Compiled from the Records of the General Land Office of the State of Texas, and Published Under the Superintendence of the Comptroller, by an Authority of an Act of the Legislature, Approved February 11, 1852. Galveston: Civilian Book Office, 1852. 8vo. 610, [2], 16, [2]pp. Later tan buckram. Leather title label to spine. Name of previous owner, Robert Lynn Batts, printed at base of spine and handwritten at the top of the first page of text. Batts was a prominent Texas attorney, judge, and a member of the board of regents for the University of Texas. Light foxing throughout. Very good. [and:] History of Texas Land. Austin: General land Office, 1958. First edition. 8vo. 18pp. Printed wrappers. Very good.

Jenkins, in Basic Texas Books, considers the Abstract of Land Claims to be "a virtual Domesday Book for Texas" and "one of the essential research tools on Texas lands and their settlement. It comprises a listing of all persons granted title to land in Texas, with date of grant, location, amount of land , and other details." Very few copies of the original 1838 edition survive (Jenkins had placed that number at eight). The second edition of 1841 is also very rare. This third edition of 1852, of which only 200 copies were printed, marks the first edition in which the list of names of grantees are placed alphabetically. Included here are about 30,000 claimants, arranged by region, as well as a section of Spanish and Mexican titles.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
