    More Information:

Basilius Valentinus, also known under the Anglicized version of his name, Basil Valentine, was a fifteenth-century alchemist. He was the Canon of the Benedictine Priory of Saint Peter in Erfurt, Germany. Even his name cannot be corroborated; during the eighteenth- century it was suggested that he was Johann Tholde. The year given for his birth in Mainz, 1394, is also uncertain.

Tholde of Hesse, "flourished between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. He was a chemist, Rathskammerer at Franckenhausen in Thuringia, and part owner of the saltworks there. He edited (actually he probably wrote) the works of Basil Valentine from 1599 to 1624, the treatise on antimony of von Suchem, and Paracelsus' Kleine Hand- und Denck-Bibel, 1605..Liborius ab Indagine narrates...(that) the Rosicrucians, after 20 years of existence, and having attained their 'majority', wanting to have a monopoly of these writings (Basil Valentine's) and to prevent further editions, got Tholde to join the order and become secretary, which office he discharged for a lengthened period." [Ferguson]

(As to Tholde's being the "real" Basil Valentine, I recommend Partington's extended discussion in volume 2 of his monumental "History of Chemistry," volume two chapter 5.)

Basilius Valentinus, also known under the Anglicized version of his name, Basil Valentine, was a 15th-century alchemist. He was the Canon of the Benedictine Priory of Sankt Peter in Erfurt, Germany. Even his name cannot be corroborated; during the 18th century it was suggested that he was Johann Thšlde. The year given for his birth in Mainz, 1394, is also uncertain.

Roger Bacon, O.F.M. (c. 1214Ð1294), also known as Doctor Mirabilis (Latin: "wonderful teacher"), was one of the most famous Franciscan friars of his time. An English philosopher who placed considerable emphasis on empiricism, he is sometimes credited as one of the earliest European advocates of the modern scientific method inspired by the works of early Muslim scientists.

Georg Phaedro's work is a "collection of receipts or prescriptions for the treatment of diseases, but ... contain(s) the methods of preparing certain chemical compounds... As a supporter of Paracelsus and advocate of his views, he was attacked by contemporaries..." " [Ferguson].

Isaac & John Isaac Holland were two Dutch jews who became famous as alchemists. The father was a diamond cutter and physician. Schmieder argues for them being active in the first quarter of the 15th century. [See: Raphael Patai's The Jewish Alchemists,1994.]
