Leo and Diane Dillon's Original Dust Jacket Artwork for the First Edition of Jerzy Kosinski's The Painted Bird

[Jerzy Kosinski], Leo and Diane Dillon. The Painted Bird. [N.p., n.d., ca. 1965]. Original Artwork. Approximately 21.5 x 17 inches. Watercolor and mixed media on glossy paper (possibly made glossy by the treatment of the artists). Mounted onto board. Signed by the Dillons with the book's title on the board in the lower right corner (most likely done by Diane). Some rubbing to board, else fine. A beautiful and powerful image, made for an equally powerful literary work. Leo (1933-2012) and Diane (b. 1933) Dillon were primarily known for their excellent illustrations of children's books (they are the only artists to win the Caldecott Medal in consecutive years, for 1976 and 1977, and were runners-up for the International Hans Christian Andersen Award in 1978 and were the U. S. nominees again in 1996; over the years, they received literally dozens of other awards). During their decades-long partnership (and marriage), they worked on all of their art together as a team, with spectacular results.
