Description[James Robinson Planché]; Lord Byron. [The Vampire, or, The Bride of the Isles]. The Bride of the Isles. A tale founded on the popular legend of the Vampire. Dublin: J. Charles, no date [but circa 1820]. 12mo in sixes. 38 pages. Illustrated with hand-colored frontispiece. Later brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Endpapers refreshed; small pencil notations to front pastedown. Internally generally clean and tight; text block toned in margins, somewhat soiled, text block edges toned with minor wear, professional repairs to the margin at the gutter of the title page and frontispiece. Very good.
As with the The Vampyre, famously attributed to Lord Byron but actually written by his one-time traveling physician, John Polidori, The Bride of the Isles is also not a direct work of Lord Byron's hand. Instead, this tale comes from a convoluted history in which Polidori's Vampyre, inspired by Byron's unfinished vampire tale, was adapted for the stage by Charles Nodier as Le Vampire. Le Vampire was then further adapted for the English stage by James Robinson Planché.
Viets, The London Editions of Polidori's "The Vampyre," 1969, pages 99-100. From the Gary Munson Collection
