Association copy, inscribed by Cooper to his daughter on the verso of the engraved title-page: "Anne Charlotte Fenimore Cooper/The gift of her father/J. Fenimore Cooper". On the facing page (the printed title-page), there is the partial signature of Cooper's other daughter, Caroline Martha Fenimore Cooper ("Caroline Martha".). Eighteenmo. [2, blank], 214, [2, ads], [2, blank] pages. With frontispiece and engraved title-page inserted at front. Eighteenth-century full dark brown calf, boards ruled in blind and gilt, burgundy gilt morocco lettering label on spine, spine tooled in gilt in compartments, three raised bands. Marbled endleaves and edges. Spine chipped at headcap; binding worn and scuffed; endleaves toned; small ink note on front free endpaper; text toned and thumbsoiled; a few gutters cracked or overopened; a few early leaves dampstained, including the leaf with the J. Fenimore Cooper inscription. Overall, a fair copy with an excellent association. From the James C. Seacrest Collection.
