[James Cox, editor]. Historical and Biographical Record of the Cattle Industry and the Cattlemen of Texas and Adjacent Territory. Saint Louis: Woodward & Tiernan Printing Co., 1895. First edition. Folio. 743pp. Color frontispiece and sixteen photographic plates and numerous additional illustrations in text. Original leather binding stamped in blind and in gilt on the boards. Floral endpapers. Marbled edges. This massive work contains historical data on early days of Texas, barbed wire, Cowboys, mavericks, cattle drives, etc.; and provides useful biographies of cattlemen. A scarce title, and oftentimes lacking the frontispiece. The copy offered here is one of the finest examples we have handled. Housed in a cloth slipcase.

From Jenkins, Basic Texas Books: "The Cox volume was sent primarily to biographees. . . In addition, the spine of the book was unequal to the task of holding together 743 folio pages and many copies literally fell apart. Furthermore, the publisher's remaining stock was destroyed, either by accidental fire or by simply being dumped on the trash heap. . . Thus are rarities created in the world of books."

Condition: Expertly restored, with leather added along the edges and joints of the spine as well as to the corners of the boards; but the majority of the leather is original and remains supple with bright gilt. Interior pages are clean, with only the gentlest of toning. Title page has light soiling and ghosting from frontispiece.
