[James Bond]. Ian Fleming. The Man with the Golden Gun. London: Jonathan Cape, [1965]. First edition, first state binding. Octavo. 221, [3, blank] pages. Publisher's black cloth with gilt-stamped gun on the front board, spine lettered in gilt, in original dust jacket. Jacket spine sunned, some rubbing and mild edgewear to jacket, verso of rear jacket flap with remnant of sticker and some damage from where the sticker had been removed. Cloth spine a bit sunned, possible repair to front joint, some rubbing and thumbsoiling to binding, a few small spots of oxidation to the gilt-stamped gun, small ink notation to front free endpaper. Foxing to edge of text block. Skewed. A very good copy of this less-common state (an apparent marriage of book and jacket). Housed in custom-built quarter brown morocco clamshell case.

Gilbert states that only about 1,000 copies of this binding out of about 81,000 copies printed were printed thus. The publisher determined that the gilt-stamping of the gun was prohibitively expensive and the results weren't as good as they hoped, so they stopped printing them with the gilt-stamped gun. Most of these copies were sold in South Africa and Australia. Gilbert A13a.
