With Two Original Pencil Sketches by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis

[Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis]. Jean Fautrier. Jean Paulham. Fautrier L'enragé. Paris: Librairie Auguste Blaizot, 1949. First edition, limited to 204 copies, of which this is number 170, from a total edition of 250 examples, with reproductions of Fautrier's work in-texte and horstexte. Reproductions printed by Mourlot. 64 pages. Frontispiece etching on Tonkin with soft crease. Folio. Sheets and plates loose in paper portfolio and board chemise, inside cloth-covered board slipcase. Slipcase with lot number 1101O tag from the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Addendum sale April 23-26, 1996. With twenty-four illustrations in the text, comprising seventeen multi-color etchings, two etchings in black, one by xylography, two heliogravures and two by zingography; and four of five varnished lithographic plates. The varnished lithographs are large plates, at approximately 19.5 x 15 inches, and suitable and attractive as display pieces.

Jackie Kennedy 1949 self-portrait drawings. With one large framed sheet of drawing paper, measuring approximately 25 x 19 inches, bearing two drawings by former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis (one on each side). The drawings, ostensibly self-portraits, were created by Kennedy Onassis while she was an American art student in Paris, in 1949 at age 20, spending her Junior year of college abroad. Jacqueline Bouvier took art classes in 1949 at l'Universite de Paris Sorbonne. Much later, Jackie Onassis said that this period, her Junior year abroad, was the happiest time of her life. Drawings are framed in a two-sided Matte Black Wood and museum quality plastic on both sides. Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis' own copy of this book, published during the year that JKO was in Paris and likely acquired by her then. As provenance, it was purchased from her belongings in the Sotheby's auctions in 1996: The Estate of Jacquline Kennedy Onassis, number 1101O in the addendum.

More Information: From the collection of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and purchased in her sale (Sotheby's, 1996), original auction catalog included. Laid in were two sheets with portraiture sketches attributed to Kennedy Onassis, executed while studying in Paris in 1949, both double sided with self-portraits. One, which included handwriting samples (supposedly that of Kennedy Onassis and an unidentified art instructor), was auctioned by Leslie Hindman in 2004, sale number 17, lot 1855; the other is included here.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
