Description

[Incunabula]. John Marchesinus. Mammotrectus... [Venice: 1478]. Possibly a Renner edition, lacking colophon on leaf 259, note of provenance explaining comparison of this copy to one in the British Museum. Quarto in eights (8.875 x 6.5 inches; 226 x 167 mm.). 25, 231 (hand-foliated, i-ccxxxii) for 256 leaves of 260, lacking A1 (blank) and three leaves, first and final two, from the final signature (marked '7'). Black letter, double columns, thirty-seven lines, initials printed in red and blue; sporadic marginalia in later holographic ink (including small doodles to some initials). Later, possibly seventh-century, vellum, spine lettered in manuscript; later endpapers. Binding loose, but still attached with thin threads; spine worn with large tear at front joint; sticker residue at bottom of spine; cellophane tape repairs to front cover. Lower corner of leaf A2 excised; some marginal wear throughout. Still, a very good, incomplete, copy. A medieval guide for interpreting the Bible that went through numerous editions in the fifteenth century.
