    More Information:

Melber's popular German-Latin dictionary, compiled with the help of Eichmann, was first printed in Speyer in ca. 1477. The present edition is a page for page reprint of an undated edition also thought to be by Husner (BMC I 146). The binding is nearly identical to that of the British Library copy of the present edition, attributed to Weihenstephan Benediktinerkloster.

Melber compiled the Vocabularius to assist preachers in improving their command of the vernacular. To this end the Vocabularius is more than a German-Latin dictionary. It gives instruction in elegant and clear, as well as correct, expression, since a more fluent use of language would enable the speaker to arouse, stimulate, and finally to persuade and convince his audience. It is this rhetorical aim, meant to apply to teachers as well as preachers, which sets the Vocabularius apart from other similar works of the time.

John Melber of Gerolzhofen wrote de Vocabulaius praedicantium (vocabulary of the preachers), which is characterized by three things: first, by the new linguistic elements in it. Secondly, to help in the transfer of Latin sermons in well-formed, rhetorical rules. And thirdly this dictionary was prepared at least partially from new sermons, possibly from lectures of the Heidelberg Professors... The lexicographers began to treat the vocabulary and texts for their readers and had worded them better to help, in a target language and in dictionary format.
