    Pair of Illuminated Leaves from a Ferial Psalter

    [Illuminated Manuscript]. Pair of Illuminated Miniatures featuring The Betrayal and Christ before Pilate. [France, ca. 1470]. Illuminated manuscripts on vellum being leaves from a Ferial Psalter. Miniatures approximately 1.5 x 3.5 inches and 1 x 2.75 inches. Leaves approximately 5.5 x 4 inches.

    The first leaf features the Betrayal of Christ. It depicts the moment when Judas, draped in red, kisses Christ, draped in blue, the signal to the Roman soldiers to arrest Christ. The second leaf features Christ who is brought before Pontius Pilate by his accusers. Christ is nude, bound, and crowned in golden thorns. Pilate is is seated in a luxurious setting and clothed in blue. A servant aids him in the washing of his hands. The leaves have golden touches throughout and feature elaborate borders filled with floral and fantastical features. Three tiny holes on the first leaf, light toning to both, tiny adhesive remnants to both. Near fine.
