Graceful Pair of Illuminated Leaves from a Flemish Book of Hours

[Illuminated Manuscript]. Pair of Illuminated Leaves from a Flemish Book of Hours featuring St. Nicholas, Mary Magdalene, and St. John of Patmos. [Flanders, ca., 1460]. Illuminated manuscripts on vellum being from a Book of Hours featuring the Suffrages or Memorials to the Saints. Approximate size of miniatures 1.25 x 1.25 inches, 1.25 x 1.25 inches, and 1.25 x 1.5 inches. Approximate size of leaves 6 x 4.25 inches. The recto of the first leaf exhibits a historiated initial of St. Nicholas draped in luxurious blue and gold, and features his traditional miter atop his head and golden crozier in his hand. Two boys emerge from a barrel, perhaps a reference to the miracle of St. Nicholas who resurrected three boys who were killed and placed in a barrel. The verso features Mary Magdalene walking in a rocky landscape and holding a vessel of ointment and a feathery plant. The recto of the second leaf shows St. John of Patmos thoughtfully writing his gospel in isolation on his island of exile. The leaves are colorful with golden touches throughout. They are bordered with breathy floral embellishments. Very light toning. Slightly frayed edges from binding. Fine.
