    A Beautiful Illuminated Manuscript Leaf Depicting the Annunciation

    [Illuminated Manuscript Leaf]. Medieval miniature on vellum of the Annunciation from a Book of Hours in Latin. ("Domine labia mea aperies...") [France: n.d., ca. 1450]. Single Leaf. Approximately 6.25 x 4.25 inches. A lovely example. Medieval Miniature in an architectural border of gold columns with red highlights and details. In a barrel-vaulted room with red ceiling, gray walls with perspective shading and green windows, and a tiled floor of pink, green and white checkerboard tiles. Mary sits with an open book on her lap surrounded by saints in various robes, all with gold nimbuses. Mary is dressed in a blue robe with wimple and the saints are in robes of blue, browns, rose, and green with gilt highlights. Over her head is the white dove of the Holy Spirit with golden rays proceeding from it. The text is in a black border in the lower third with the initial letter in blue with a rose surround and gilt infill. There are floral designs in the center of the gold ground in the letter. The text of six lines in a Latin book hand has one large initial "D" in blue on a vermilion background with a central floral image on a gold background. There are two smaller initials in gold on a red ground within the text.
    The verso has twenty five lines of text in a Batarde Secretary in brown ink. There are five decorated initials in gold on alternating red and blue grounds with decoration. At the left, is a border elaborately decorated with flowers, vines, and other decorative elements against gold, rose, and brown. From the Krown & Spellman Collection.
