A Lovely Missal Leaf with a Large Historiated Initial Depicting King Melchisedek

[Illuminated Manuscript]. Large Leaf from Missal or Antiphoner. [Italy, possibly Florence, n.d., ca. 1500].

Illuminated manuscript on vellum being a large leaf with a historiated initial "S" taken from a large missal or antiphoner. Approximately 25.25 x 17.25 inches.

The miniature depicts an elderly bearded priest in red and gold vestments, holding a chalice with lid, containing the Holy Wafer. In the background is a landscape with rocks and foliage, and a large river with six ships. Image is in full color inside a large "S" ("Sacredotes dei in eturnum," from Hebrews 7:17). The initial also has a very elaborate leafy design in full color, surrounded by gold (approximate size of initial is 7.25 x 7.25 inches). This is on the recto of the leaf, with five lines each of text in a rounded gothic hand and of music in a four-line red stave, the second letter of the text is a large calligraphic design, covering two lines and surrounded by elaborate ink-work. With a full border at the margins of the leaf, in full colors and gold. Slight rubbing to lower edge of border, a small tear in the sky at the top of the miniature. An imposing leaf, still bright and fine (framed and glazed).

The style is similar to that of Antonio di Girolamo (1479-1538?), a student of Boccardino and Attavante, and mentioned as working on the choirbooks of the Duomo in 1525-1526.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
