    Medieval Book of Hours

    [Illuminated Manuscript]. Large Illuminated Initial "D" from a Medieval Book of Hours: Matins. France: circa 1450. Double sided single vellum leaf. 5.5 x 7.5 inches. Finely illuminated leaf from a French Book of Hours. Recto: Seven line initial "D" in blue on a vermilion background decorated in white with a thick liquid gold center decorated with floral design in blue, red, pink, and green. Seventeen lines of text in black and red. Four smaller initials in gold, blue, pink, red, and white. The text is bordered at the right and bottom in a wide border of blue and vermilion with gold squares separating the colors. The leaf is bordered on all sides with floral vines, acanthus leaves, a decorative element. Verso: Seventeen lines of text in black and red with three illuminated initials in gold on blue and red decorated borders. Light edge wear, some old tape marks and remnants at edge from old mounting, very light smudges or soiling in borders, verso with small light holograph pencil book dealer's marks on both lower corners. Very good.
