A Delicate Miniature Depicting The Presentation in the Temple

[Illuminated Manuscript]. Illuminated Miniature of The Presentation in the Temple from a Book of Hours. [Central or Northern France, probably Bourges, early sixteenth century]. Illuminated manuscript on vellum being a leaf from a Book of Hours. In Latin for the use of Rome. The miniature is approximately 4.25 x 3.75 inches. The leaf is approximately 7.5 x 5.25 inches. This miniature depicts Christ's participation in the longstanding ritual of the presentation of a child to the Lord forty days after birth (Luke 2:22-40). The Virgin, draped in blue, kneels beside the altar and gently presents the slightly weary Christ Child to Simeon the Righteous, draped in red and standing below a green canopy. A young girl behind the Virgin holds a small basket containing a pair of sacrificial turtledoves. Upon receiving Christ, Simeon prophesies that Christ will bring redemption to the world. This small miniature, held within the bounds of a gold and red architectural frame, is rich in context, color and volume. The initials feature floral designs. The verso features text. Leaf very slightly toned, small adhesive remnants on verso. Fine.
