Description

Miniature of St. Adrian from a Book of Hours

[Illuminated Manuscript]. Illuminated Miniature of St. Adrian. [S. Netherlands, Bruges, n.d.]. Illuminated manuscript on vellum being a leaf from a Book of Hours. Approximately 9 x 6.5 inches.

An example of horror vacui, this leaf has very little undecorated space. St. Adrian, dressed in armor and cloaked in green and black, is placed centrally in a highly geometric interior as he steps atop a small lion. He is set against a drapery held by two winged angels. The border closest to the miniature features colorful geometric flowers on golden background. The larger border features feathery floral flourishes with small characters sprinkled throughout. The verso has text and the floral border along one side. Some toning. The verso shows remnants of adhesive and is slightly faded. Near fine.
