    Fifteenth Century Breviary Leaf

    [Illuminated Manuscript]. [Illuminated Initial from a Breviary on vellum:] "Deus in audiutorium... Enixa est puerera quem Gabriel praedixerat quem matris..." England [?]: circa 1450. Double sided leaf. Approximately 6 x 8 inches. Finely illuminated leaf from a Breviary on vellum. Recto: One large four-line initial "D"; a two-line "S" and two one-line initials. The large "D" is in blue and white on a pink ground bordered in gold with floral elements in the center. Extending from the initial are vines with blue flowers and gold buds and a plant with green leaves and red flowers. The "S" is gold with blue and pink colors. Verso: Thirteen lines of text with eight gold initials in red and pink grounds.
    The text begins with the "Septiformen gratiam tunc accetaverunt" of Sext. It is followed with the hymn "Enixa est puerera quem Gabriel praedixera". Light soiling and darkening around the edges, two small holes in upper margin, two pieces of tape in right margin of verso from old mounting, small holograph pencil book dealer's numbers in one corner of both sides, edge wear with small notches in inner edge from binding, crease in the upper corner; else in very good condition.
