    Description

    A Handsome Sixteenth-Century Spanish
    Illuminated Manuscript on Vellum

[Illuminated Manuscript]. Carta Executoria a Pedimento de Pedro Guillem de las Casas. Vezino de la Cibdad de Xaen... [Granada: 1590]. Manuscript on vellum. Small folio. Approximately 12 x 8.5 inches. Fifty-two leaves, manuscript on versos and rectos. Leaves ruled in blue and written in dark brown ink. With twelve painted and illuminated initials of figures of Spanish Saints, the final initial depicting King Philip II enthroned. Dark brown ink floral decorations throughout. Final leaf is an unruled manuscript. Contemporary full red velvet binding. Binding worn and damaged, several leaves are neatly cut (some of which are repaired with pieces of vellum). Binding cords visible in several places. Still, a handsome item. Laid-in is a possibly later painting of Christ on vellum (trimmed and creased, with a few marginal tears). It seems to be from a different source (this is based on the different style of the artwork).
