    Mid-Eighteenth Century "Elephant" Bible

[Holy Bible] The Holy Bible, Containing the Old and New Testaments. London: Thomas Baskett; and the assigns of Robert Baskett, 1753. Folio (463 x 310 mm). Text in double columns. Title page engraved in red and black. There is a list of thirty-three names on the verso of the title page, dated from 1840 to 1953, confirming that this Bible is a family heirloom.
Contemporary calf, peeling away from boards (the back cover is almost entirely peeled off). Hinges cracked. Corners bumped and showing. Significant loss to leather at spine ends. FFEP nearly detached. Dedication leaf with heaving foxing and severely tattered edges. Significant soiling to last pages as well as endpapers.
Several repairs have been made over time. The title page is detached, with significant soiling, staining and edgewear. In addition, the lower right corner has been repaired. There are several other instances of marginal edge repair throughout the textblock. Generally fair condition.
