[Henry Thompson] Milam. Texas. Sketches of Character; Moral and Political Condition of the Republic; the Judiciary &c. Philadelphia: Brown, Bicking & Guilbert. 1839. 16mo. 95 pp. Embossed cloth. Black leather label on spine with gilt lettering. Former owner's inscription on initial flyleaf. Minor wear at board corners and spine ends. Light age toning of textblock. Interior bindery stitching is beginning to loosen. Generally fine.

When this book was published, the true identity of its author was unknown. However, letters to and from President Mirabeau Lamar and his personal secretary Henry Thompson reveal that Thompson did indeed write and publish this book. It is interesting to note that the work contains just a single mention of one of Texas' most well-loved citizens, President Sam Houston. By way of explaining the single Sam Houston entry in the book, the author damns Houston with faint praise, "... the victor of Santa Anna and the Hero of San Jacinto must not be omitted in these pages." Thompson's political leanings and preferences were not unknown at the time, which may be why he chose to publish under a pseudonym.
