Large octavo. Original blind stamped full calf over beveled boards with an American eagle atop a shield emblazoned with "Stanley" with floral devices in each corner. Twelve stiff gilt-edge cardboard pages with both text and six silver gelatin mounted photographic portraits mounted in blind stamped mats. Silk covered hinges. Decorative endpapers. Moderate crazing to the leather with modest wear at the extremities. Spine re-backed. Externally very good condition with fine contents and photographs.

    More Information: Includes images of Stanley, Lieutenant W. G. Stairs, Surgeon Thomas Heazle Parke, Captain Robert Henry Nelson, and Mr. A. J. Mounteney-Jephson. The sixth photograph depicts the testimonial shield and medallion which was designed by Henry S. Welcome and wrought in silver by Elkinton & Co., London. Five photographs are by Henry Van Dere Weyde, with the profile portrait of Stanley by John Fergus. Five pages of text, printed on blue paper include the banquet's menu, committee members and guests, and an explanation of the Stanley tribute medallions. A few of the committee members included Paul Du Chaillu, Henry Wellcome, P.T. Barnum, Bret Harte, J. McNeil Whistler, among other luminaries and other officials. A very rare piece of Stanley ephemera issued in honor of his return from the Emin Relief Expeditions and just after the publication of In Darkest Africa.
