The First Publication from the Personal Diaries, Private Letters, Papers and Revealing Interviews of Harry S. Truman . New York: Farrar, Straus and Young, [1952].

First edition. Inscribed and signed by Harry S Truman while president of the United States, below the portrait frontispiece: "My best to Commander and Mrs. Lingo. Harry S Truman. White House. April 26, 1952." Quarto. 253 pages. Exclusive color and black and white photographs by Alfred Wagg. Laid in is a handwritten note from Jane Lingo, a childhood friend of Margaret Truman reading: "Dear Mr. President, Please write in this for Mama and Daddy. Thank you. Jane Lingo." Also laid in is a sheet of notepaper on White House stationery directing delivery of the book to Miss Lingo.

Full gilt-stamped cloth is lightly faded. Some shelf wear to bottom edge of boards. Stray ink mark to fore-edge. Dust jacket is torn, chipped, and creased. Very good.

The Lingos were family friends of the Trumans. Benjamin Harrison Lingo was a commander in the U.S. Navy, his wife Marie was the director of the Washington, DC U.S.O., and their daughter Jane was a childhood friend of Truman's daughter Margaret. Jane, who later became the first woman admitted into the National Press Club, is mentioned in the book in one of Truman's diary entries.
