[Hans Holbein]. Icones mortis, Duodecim Imaginibus praeter priores...[Tranlated by Georgius Aemilius]. Lyons: Sub Scuto Coloniensi, 1547. One of two 1547 Latin editions (the other published under the title: Imagines mortis). Small quarto in eights (5.4375 x 3.6875 inches; 139 x 94 mm). [88] leaves. Signatures: A-L8. Captions for the cuts in roman letter, legends in italic; most of the appended text in italic with small italic marginalia. Fifty-three woodcuts in the text by Hans Holbein, forty-two cut in wood by Hans Lutzelburger, the remainder unattributed. Frellon's woodcut "crab and butterfly" device (Baudrier, no. 1) on title-page. Decorative and historiated woodcut initials. Colophon on L8 verso: Lugduni, Excudebat Joannes Frellonius, 1547.Bound by Lortic of Paris (stamp-signed in gilt on front turn-in: Lortic) in red crushed levant morocco. Covers decoratively panelled in gilt; spine in six compartments with five gilt-ruled raised bands and gilt lettering in two compartments; board edges with double gilt fillet; gilt inner dentelles; marbled endpapers; all edges gilt over marbling. Green, red, and yellow ribbon bookmark. Corners lightly rubbed; corners of rear cover very slightly bumped; joints lightly rubbed at spine ends. Free endleaves slightly browned at the edges from turn-ins. Quarter-inch tear to upper edges of A1 and A2, not affecting text; a few leaves with very tiny nick or ding at upper edge. Small faint stain in outer blank margin of K5, K6, and K7; very occasional faint foxing or minor marginal soiling. A beautiful copy. Protected in a linen clamshell case.
"One of two 1547 Latin editions. The Icones is frequently recorded as an issue of the edition with the Imagines title, but the work was entirely reset. In this same year of 1547, Frellon printed two editions Holbein's Old Testament woodcuts, changing the title to begin with same word 'Icones' (Nos. 281-282)" (Mortimer, in Harvard, French).
"Fifty-three woodcuts as in the 1547 Imagines mortis (No. 287). Between the printing of the 1549 Italian edition (No. 290) and the next Frellon edition of 1562 (No. 291), the Holbein blocks appeared in a 1554 edition under this title of Icones mortis, with a Basel imprint but with no publisher or printer named... This is not strictly a page-for-page reprint, but it closely follows the 1547 Icones, and not only the blocks for the illustrations but the initials (with one possible exception) are from Frellon's stock. There is a good possibility that this 1554 edition was actually printed by Frellon at Lyons for sale at Basel. (See Baudrier, vol. 5, p. 156-157, 160, for brief notes on Frellon's connection with Basel.)" (Mortimer, in Harvard, French).
Adams D73; Baudrier V, pp. 209-210; Harvard, French, 288.
