    Description

[H. G. Wells, association]. C. K. Ogden. Edited Version of Wells' The Rights of Man by Ogden. [N.p., n. d., ca. 1940]. A collection of related manuscript notes by Ogden. With an envelope in Wells' hand.

    More Information:

Consisting of: thirty-four octavo pages of manuscript (on thirty three octavo leaves of plain white paper, including the Rough First Draft of Ogden's later "edited version" of A Declaration of the Rights of Man) in various packets held together by either staples or paperclips. Approximately 9.75 x 6 inches. This material includes sections entitled: Notes, Historical Note, Rough First Draft/General Note, Notes and Queries, along with other material. One of these leaves is stapled to another leaf of manuscript in (Ogden's?) hand. Some creases, staple and paperclip marks. [and:] Seven uncorrected proofs of the General Note of The Rights of Man, each consisting of six octavo leaves, rectos only. Four of these proofs have cover pages or covering note pages. Two have corrections or notes most likely by Ogden, the others have notes or corrections by others. Each bound by a staple in the upper left margin. Some creasing, staple marks. [and:] Two original photographs of Wells. One is a small cabinet photograph of Wells fixing a bicycle, with a manuscript note on the verso: "H. G. Wells Sandygate 1900" in an unknown hand. Approximately 4.25 x 3.25 inches. Some toning, minor wear, evidence of sticker removal on verso. In original mailing envelope in Wells' hand. The other is a print of a publicity photo of an older Wells (ca. 1940's) in a library (holding a copy of The Seven Pillars). Approximately 8 x 6 inches. Some wear to margins. [and:] Enid M. Nisbet. Two typescripts of short essays on Wells' life, one entitled H. G. Wells as the Young Writer, the other entitled The Centenary of H. G. Wells (evidently the introduction only). Six quarto leaves and four folio leaves on plain white paper, rectos only. Some creasing, the quarto leaves bound together by a staple in the upper left corner. Generally very good. The entire collection housed in a custom-built clamshell case. Originally from the John McLaughlin/Book Sail Collection.
