Description

A Look at the Amazing Work of The Guild of Women-Binders.

[Guild of Women-Binders]. The Bindings of To-morrow: A Record of the Work of the Guild of Women-Binders and of the Hampstead Bindery. London: Guild of Women-Binders, 1902.

First edition, limited to 500 copies of which this is number 34. Octavo. xxxii pages. Fifty full color plates.

Publisher's green cloth with gilt stamped titles on spine and blind ruled boards. All edges untrimmed. Cloth is rubbed with darkened edges and backstrip.

Illustrated with beautiful chromolithographs by Griggs and Company, this volume was published to promote the work of The Guild of Women-Binders (also see Lot 36137) by its founder, Frank Karslake, who also founded The Hampstead Bindery. The Guild was formed in 1898 with the goal of increasing opportunities for women in a field outside the standard professions of teaching, dressmaking, and type-writing. Some of its members - notably Edith and Florence de Rheims, Constance Karslake, Muriel Driffield - were highly talented and imaginative binders, as the illustrations in this volume suggest. The Guild established its own workshop and conducted training courses allowing members to learn from some of the established male binders of the day, and to experiment with new techniques. In spite of Karslake's efforts, sales were never very strong and the Guild only continued until 1904, though several of the members continued to practice beyond that time.
