    [Gregor Reisch]. "Charon, the Ferryman of the Underworld in Hell" Woodcut Leaf Taken from the Margarita Philosophica. Strassburg: John Schott, 1504. Woodcut: 5 x 6.5 inches. Leaf: 6 x 8 inches. Image on recto, Latin text on verso. Leaf tipped into a matte frame and attached by two pieces of tape along the right margin of the verso, not affecting text. Light edge wear, dampstains in the margins with minimal affect to the woodcut block, small worm hole in woman's forehead (she is at the front of the ferry boat), light bleedthrough in blank upper margin from running title on verso; else in very good condition.     Taken from Gregor Reisch's "Natural Philosophy" section of the Margarita Philosophica. This book was once considered the "Tree of all Knowledge" and is considered as one of the first printed encyclopedias. Its illustrations, dealing with science and history are some of the earliest known on the various subjects.

     

    Charon is the ferryman of Hell who carriers souls from the world of the living to the world of the dead.
