    [Gold Rush]. Jacob R. Eckfeldt and William E. Du Bois. New Varieties of Gold and Silver Coins, Counterfeit Coins, and Bullion; with Mint Values. Philadelphia: Printed by the Authors, 1850. First edition of this rare and important book. Presentation copy, inscribed by one of the authors, "Geo. W. Edelman / with the respects of / The authors / Feb. 14 1850" on the front free endpaper. Small octavo. 60 pages. With pictorial frontispiece depicting the mint, blue plate printed in gold entitled "California and Mormon Coins", and the final leaf entitled "The Mormon Coins" inserted. With two actual samples of California gold in a special mounted frame and underneath formica disks on page 45. Complete. Bound in the original publisher's printed paper over boards (the paper on the front board is printed in gold, depicting ten gold coins, the paper on the rear board is printed in silver, depicting ten silver coins. Spine almost entirely perished, Some wear to boards, paper over boards a bit wrinkled, rear board almost detached, joints and hinges cracked, some foxing to text, some pencil notations in the front and rear. Still, a good copy of this "important reference book for the beginning of gold mining in California." (Streeter). The recipient of this book, George W. Edelman, was the Deputy Treasurer, U. S. Assay Office in New York, and wrote several books about gold coins and their values. Streeter 2629. Cowan p. 191. Sabin 21786.
