Description[Georges Buffon]. Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux. Paris: de l'Imprimerie Royale, 1770-1783. First edition. Containing volumes sixteen through twenty-four of Histoire Naturelle, Générale et Particulière by Buffon. First edition, complete in nine quarto volumes (approximately 10 x 7.5 inches). With all 262 uncolored engraved plates (executed after the sets of hand-colored illustrations available proved insufficient for the entire print run). Contemporary mottled calf, boards gilt-stamped with armorial device, spines, lettered and tooled in gilt in compartments, burgundy gilt morocco lettering labels, five raised bands, marbled endleaves. A few volumes bound with half-title. Engraved title-pages. Some wear to bindings, hinges starting, volume II lacks free endpapers, and rear blank is nearly detached. Some foxing to text, light foxing to plates. Overall, a very good set. Sitwell, Fine Bird Books, pp. 82-83.
