The Incredibly Rare First American Biography of George Washington

[George Washington]. Thomas Thornton. A True and Authentic History of His Excellency George Washington, Commander in Chief of the American Army during the late War, and present President of the United States. Also, of the Brave Generals Montgomery and Greene. And the Celebrated Marquis de La Fayette. To Which Is Added, an Ode on General Washington's Birth Day. Philadelphia: Printed by Peter Stewart, in Second-street, ninth Door above Chesnut-street, for Robert Stewart, travelling Bookseller, 1790. First edition of the first American biography of George Washington. Small octavo (approximately 7 x 4.25 inches). 23 pages. Self-wrappered, string-bound. Some toning, marginal creasing and light wear. Still, a superb copy of this incredibly rare item. Although most of this material originally appeared in Jedidiah Morse's The American Geography (1789), this is the first separately published biography of Washington in America. Due to the fragile nature of this item, very few examples of this work exist (Americana Exchange states that only four copies have been at auction since 1906). Howes 144. Sabin 97086. Evans 21978, 22933.
