[George Washington]. John Marshall. The Life of George Washington, Commander in Chief of the American Forces, during the war which established the independence of his country, and First President of the United States. Compiled under the Inspection of The Honourable Bushrod Washington, from Original Papers bequeathed to him by his deceased relative, and now in possession of the author. To which is prefixed, An Introduction, containing a compendious view of the colonies planted by the English on the Continent of North America, from their settlement to the commencement of that war which terminated in their Independence. Philadelphia: Printed and Published by C. P. Wayne, 1804-1807.

First edition. Five octavo volumes (8.375 x 5.125 inches). [2], xxii, 488, 45, [1, blank]; viii, 560, 72; viii, 580, 28; [iii]-viii, 626, [1], [1, blank], 16; vii, [1, blank], 779, [1, blank], 36 pages. Engraved frontispiece portrait by D. Edwin in Volume I, with tissue guard. Without the atlas volume containing ten folding engraved maps of the military campaigns.

Contemporary tree calf. Smooth spines decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, board edges decoratively tooled in gilt, marbled endpapers, edges sprinkled brown. Bindings lightly rubbed, head of spines of Volumes I, II, III, and V chipped, with small sliver missing from head of spine of Volume I. Some light to moderate foxing and browning, as usual. Volume II with intermittent dampstaining in the lower outer corner and with lower corner of H1 (pp. 49/50) torn away. Small dampstain to front cover and first four leaves of Volume V. Volume I with early ink signature of Wm. Withers at head of title and on blank leaf following title (offsetting onto first page of preface), early ink shelf number and penciled signature of Annie Withers on front flyleaf. Early ink shelf number and signature of Wm. Withers, 1805, on front flyleaves of Volumes II-V. Bookplate of Robert W. Withers on front pastedown of each volume. A very good set.

"In writing the Life of Washington, which is comprised in the First Volume, I have endeavoured to follow closely the order of time, adopting the plan of a personal narrative, and introducing collateral events no farther than was absolutely necessary to give completeness to this design. After the able, accurate, and comprehensive work of Chief Justice Marshall, it would be presumptuous to attempt a historical biography of Washington" (Jared Sparks, in the Preface to Volume I of The Writings of George Washington).
