Carte de visite of Washington mounted to verso of the front free endpaper. With two-line correction on page 282 as noted by Sabin.
Late-nineteenth or early-twentieth century brown cloth with titles stamped in gilt on a leather spine label. Boards scuffed with wear at the corners and spine ends. Edges with a few small stains. Front hinge cracked. Title page trimmed at the top removing the uppermost title text "A Collection." Pages toned with uniform type burn on each page and scattered foxing throughout, significantly on pages 82 through 97. An incredibly rare work, all things considered, in very good condition.
An anthology of Washington's speeches and correspondence important for, among other things, his exchanges between the Jewish communities of New York, Richmond, Charleston, and notably Newport to which he replies "May the children of the flock of Abraham, who dwell in this land, continue to merit and enjoy the good will of the other inhabitants - while every one shall sit in safety under his own vine and fig tree, and there shall be none to make him afraid."
