Description

[Garth Williams, illustrator]. Original Pencil Drawing for the Front Cover of Margaret Wise Brown's I Like Everything [eventually published as The Friendly Book]. [N.p., n.d., ca. 1959]. (Golden Books, 1959). On off-white tissue-paper (it is possible that the paper was once white). Approximately 12 x 9.25 inches. Signed by Williams in the lower right corner in pencil. Some edgewear to the drawing, not affecting image. A very good example of this beautiful drawing. Although this drawing appears finished, it is unlikely that it was the final artwork used for the publication of the book. [and:] [Garth Williams, illustrator]. Margaret Wise Brown. The Friendly Book. New York: Golden Books, [1954, though later]. Later reprint. Some rubbing. Very good.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
