Garth Williams' Own Copy, With His Ownership Signature

[Garth Williams, illustrator]. E. B. White. WILLIAMS' COPY, SIGNED. Stuart Little. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1945.

First edition, first printing, with code "I-U" on copyright page. Garth Williams' personal copy with his signature. Octavo. 131 pages. Illustrations by Garth Williams.

Publisher's tan cloth with green and white stamping. Corners very lightly bumped. A better than very good copy, in what appears to be an untrimmed proof copy of the dust jacket, measuring approximately 8.5 x 22.5 inches, with jacket height extending slightly past the binding and flaps slightly larger than the full size of the boards; jacket chipped. With "Dorothea and Garth Williams" written in ink on the half-title page, in Garth Williams' hand. Dorothea was Williams' second wife; they married in 1945, the year Stuart Little was published. An incredible association copy of Garth Williams' first book.

In an unpublished letter dated October 10, 1945 in the Harper files, E. B. White wrote: "I think Garth Williams deserves all the bouquets that could be handed him for a brilliant and imaginative job. He has made the pictures enhance and add to the text in the way only the very best illustrators can and has made the book his book too in every way" (Neumeyer, p. 198). From the Estate of Garth Williams.
