With Garth Williams' Charming Valentine's Day Inscription to His Wife, Signed "Garth Wilbur Williams"

[Garth Williams, illustrator]. E. B. White. GARTH WILLIAMS' COPY. Charlotte's Web. New York: Harper & Brothers, [n.d.].

Presentation copy of a later edition (with code "B-F" on copyright page), lovingly and playfully inscribed on the half-title page to his wife Leticia on Valentine's Day, 1977: "For LETICIA, the most beautiful girl, and the most wonderful wife, and I hope you will stay with me all of my life. If life is tough and I feel like Wilbur, I look at Leticia and there is my Charlotte. Only one hope -- one plea -- one prayer. If you have some children I will love every one, but please in this don't be like Charlotte. Just a few less please -- perhaps just one. Garth Wilbur Williams / February 14, 1977." Octavo. 184 pages.

Publisher's tan cloth, stamped in blue and black. Very good in a chipped dust jacket.

Garth Williams' second collaboration with E. B. White, after their successful first effort, Stuart Little. In her soaring review of the book in The New York Times, Eudora Welty wrote: "The book has liveliness and felicity, tenderness and unexpectedness, grace and humor and praise of life, and the good backbone of succinctness that only the most highly imaginative stories seem to grow. [...] As a piece of work it is just about perfect." She neglects to mention the illustrations specifically, but she does use the word "adorable," a word that certainly describes Garth Williams' drawings.

Leticia Williams is Garth Williams' fourth wife and the primary force in helping him organize his works. They were married in 1974 and were together until his death in 1996, and they did, in fact, have one child, a daughter, Dilys. A wonderful, endearing presentation inscription in which Mr. Williams reveals not only his love for his wife but also his love for his illustrated subjects. From the Estate of Garth Williams.
