    Inscribed by Franklin Pierce to His Son Benjamin

Inscribed by Franklin Pierce, "Benjamin Pierce / from his affectionate / Father / Dec. 25, 1851" on the front free endpaper. Octavo. 411 pages. Illustrated. Publisher's original green cloth lavishing decorated in gilt. All edges gilt. Spine a bit darkened; front hinge starting; scattered moderate to heavy foxing, else very good and sold in a modern slipcase. The soon-to-be 14th President of the United States has lovingly inscribed this volume, a Christmas present, to his ten year old son, Benjamin. Sadly, Benjamin would be killed little more than a year later in a railroad accident. From a private collection in North Carolina.
